Kiambu Clean-up Project
Rotaract Club of Nairobi Muthaiga North
Brief:
Having the Christmas season close-by we as a club
decided to make the streets clean thus we had a
clean-up project on the 1st of December 2018 in
Kiambu town.
The project kicked off at exactly 9:30am on a very chilly
Saturday morning and managed to clean up 3 markets
which was very impressive for a total 13 Rotaractors in
attendance and finished at about 1:30pm.
We were glad to be joined by two members from the
Rotaract Club of Westlands who really were active in
the project.
We also partnered with the Green Rotaract Concept
who were fully represented by their Chair Frank
Mwangi and the Kiambu County Government which
was represented by the Environment Sec of the
Kiambu Sub County Madam. Grace and three of her
colleagues.
Objective of the project:
• To clean-up Kiambu market for the traders.
• To spread environmental awareness with a
touch of Rotary.
• To have fun when serving.
September is basic Education and Literacy month as a theme
designed for the month as part of the monthly themes in Rotary
(Rotaract) at large. On the 21st day of September 2018, our team
from the Rotaract Club of UTAMU (RUTAMU) set out to go carry
out a library refurbishment at Bukasa Nursery and Primary School
in Muyenga. From last year, we had this planed out; we carried out
a needs assessment and started right off with fundraising for funds
for the project. Well, there are always various needs to fundraise
towards but you’ve just got to choose one that you are ready to
complete to the very end. Just to take you back, last year (RY
2017/2018) we did our annual project being our phase one at this
very school where we constructed an incinerator, planted trees,
donated scholastic materials, a play swing and re-usable sanitary
ware. As a government funded school, funds do not come easily
and also when they come through; they are insufficient and can’t
cover every need.
Fast forward, the objectives for this project were to provide library
shelves for the library of Bukasa primary school, and also provide
chairs and tables to be used in the library for the school with a
population of about 800 pupils.
AN URGENT CALL FOR SAFE SOCKS.
A moment of silence, please, to honor the billions of socks lost in
our service. Lost? Who can say? Cast aside. Jilted. Whatever. It’s
disgraceful how carelessly we treat socks in this world.
You’ll find these once fluffy companions flattened and moldering
in parking lots, plastered against washer drums in laundromats,
balled up in Lost and Found collections from sea to shining sea.
Are we that cold-hearted, that indifferent? Have we completely
lost our humanity?
Socks belong on our feet, not on missing posters. Keep a careful
watch over them, ladies and gentlemen. Spending a lifetime
stuffed in a hot, sweaty shoe isn’t a great gig, so they plan escape. And they’re wily bastards, cunning little
shape-shifters. When opportunity knocks, zoom — they’re gone.
So do a head count on laundry day. Stop leaving them in hotel and locker rooms, along roadsides. They aren’t
smart, they won’t find their way home. When one does turn up missing, and one will sooner or later, launch a
search party. Rustle up a posse. Track that bad boy down.
Let’s put an end to these senseless disappearances. We have sock drawers for a reason. Put a lock on
yours, maybe a motion detector. Drastic measures and close supervision are called for. Thank you for your
cooperation.
#NailsForBalls
The month of November is dedicated to men’s health awareness.
dfcu Bank is focusing on raising awareness of prostate cancer in
particular. This #Movember, they’ve decided to do things a little
different. Instead of asking men to grow their mustache (me I’ve
still grown mine. It has it’s own personality now), they’re asking
the ladies to grow their nails or have their nails polished with
mustache nail art to show their support. Once you’ve captured
a Johnson like our Martha, it’d be great to have them around for
long. Yes?
As nyongeza, dfcu bank is rewarding 6 ladies by giving them a
free manicure at one of Kampala’s most known salons and is also
giving 18 gentlemen a free cancer screening. Check out their
social media pages for details on how to participate.
We happily report that all the objectives for the project were fully
achieved and we donated library shelves, tables and chairs. Our
Club president and head mistress commissioned the library on this
very day amidst thunder hand claps and screams of joy.
We also provided literacy about child abuse led by a team from Sauti
under the Ministry of gender, labour and social development. Ms.
Doreen informed the children about their rights and highlighted the
difference between child rights and responsibilities. “When mummy
asks you to sweep the compound, that is a child responsibility and
not child abuse”, she said. The children were also taken through
the process of reporting a child abuse case to Sauti, which was
demonstrated by calling 116 (a toll free line).
If we had all gotten financial literacy about all these usual talks of
saving and budgeting early enough then we would be far better off
at each stage we are each on or even not struggling, depending
on your case. A team from Iprofile foundation represented by Ms
Teddy Nyaketcho took the pupils through financial literacy and
what’s there to know about financial management in terms of
setting goals, budgeting, saving just to mention a few.
This was what we stepped out to do but after executing the project
we realized that we can do better with the library to achieve
maximum satisfaction to us and the beneficiaries, thus we plan to
get partnerships and sponsorships to better the outcome before
the end of this Rotary.
A few years down the road through the different phases of the
project, we shall forever be glad to have been part of the cause.
