GREEN TREEFROG
Hyla cinerea These small green tree frogs have long legs , sticky toe pads , and a striking stripe along each side . Native to the coastal plain , their population is stable . During the day they sleep unnoticed tucked into vegetation . Males gather at swamp and pond edges during breeding season ( March -October) for nighttime call fests . They often visit porch and patio areas where they feast on insects drawn to the lights .
STOKES ASTER
Stokesia laevis A very adaptable low-growing native perennial ideal for areas with shade for part of the day . Once established , Stokes aster is loaded with fluffy blue flower heads , and its dark green foliage forms an attractive ground cover when planted in mass . Also makes a great cut flower and attracts butterflies and bees !
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD
Archilochus colubris Our only resident hummingbirds return yearly to raise a family , generally , from mid-March to mid-October . These tiny dynamos weigh the equivalent of a nickel . Their nest , made from spider webs and plant bits , is just big enough to hold one or two eggs the size of small jelly beans . Extremely territorial , they tolerate people well . Voracious eaters , insects are the main source of protein and native plants are the favorite source of nectar .
