perfect for painting a dimensional sketch . Together , we explored the various layers of the marsh , including the tidal saltwater , vibrant grasses , and the trees . As we discussed the importance of each component , we added more layers to our watercolor paintings . In the end , the workshop resulted in a finished painting of the landscape and a lifelong memory of the subject for each of the participants .
In a world flooded with digital screens and unbridled development expansion , the profound importance of fostering deep , memorable connections with nature should not be ignored . As environmentalists who wish to inspire environmental action and concern , we must think of ways to engage the public through safe , respectful , and influential avenues . According to scientific researchers AJ Howell and Louise Chawla , immersive creative experiences like painting in nature have the capacity to affect human intention and alter lifetime environmental behaviors .
While it ’ s impossible to say for certain whether or not this specific watercolor workshop will leave a lasting impression on artists , certainly both survey results and my own opportunity to witness the event suggest that at least the Kiawah Conservancy and I hosted a positive experience . Just by looking at the paintings , I was able to see such a variety in humannature interactions . Individual artists saw unique shapes and chose different areas of the subject for focus . This demonstrates how each participating artist was able to have a personal moment with the marsh on Kiawah Island , allowing them to interact with the subject in their own preferred way .
As Kiawah Island continues to develop , it is important to protect the island ’ s natural spaces and to make them accessible and vital to visitors and residents . Hosting future watercolor workshops may be one way to help protect the precious wild spaces we have left .
THE FALL OF 2023 WILL BRING ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY FOR ARTISTS OF ALL LEVELS TO EXPLORE KIAWAH ’ S NATURAL WONDERS THROUGH WATERCOLOR . THE NEXT WORKSHOP WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY , OCTOBER 18 .
