wetland bird species , and many invertebrates . They also serve as buffers for storm surges , provide wildlife habitats , and offer gorgeous scenery . This role demands respect and appreciation from human visitors , therefore I chose to explore ways in which we humans can safely interact with the space .
The fall watercolor workshop I hosted with support from the Kiawah Conservancy was an investigation into how the practice of painting a natural landscape in Kiawah Island has the potential to affect participants ’ connectedness to the island . Painting alongside the other artists , I witnessed firsthand how the experience helped participants build lasting memories , enhance their ability to recall specific plants , and paint together to form interpersonal relationships and personal reflection .
The Marsh House setting was even more perfect than I ’ d imagined . It offered gorgeous , sweeping views of the marsh and comfortable seating for the artists . At 9am on a Monday , the painters arrived at the scene and chose their seats to begin a plein air ( outdoor painting ) experience . Each was provided with a complete watercolor kit , including art materials donated by art companies Blick and Derwent . The kits included a paint palette consisting of twenty-four water-soluble pigments , a paintbrush , professional-grade watercolor paper , and a cup of water .
We began the practice as a light rain fell and sounds of morning birds flew through the tree canopy . The marsh was highlighted by the rising morning sun , which also provided intense shadows in the marsh ,
