Many of the lands we have identified for preservation hold documented historical significance — protection of these areas gives us the opportunity to make sure the history within lives on . Also , within our watershed lies land that culturally defines the rural and agricultural nature of the area . All around this area is land that was once used or is still being used by farmers and artisans . From tomato farmers to sweetgrass basket weavers , this land represents a way of life . While the Conservancy looks to protect wildlife habitat , we also look to protect the rural and cultural traditions that define the Lowcountry .
Conservation is an ongoing battle , but it ’ s one that we are committed to fighting . Land preservation , our greatest tool for conservation , is not only important for the immediate ecological and cultural benefits it brings but also for the benefits it provides in the future . Our goal is to make sure that our conservation efforts last in perpetuity , and to do our part to ensure that both human and wildlife communities get to enjoy the Lowcountry ' s critical natural resources for generations to come .
