As we work to spread awareness and implement these nature-focused approaches in conservation , our resilient marshes are given more opportunity to thrive and provide natural benefits to the entire ecological system , including us , along the coast .
elevation data , tide levels , and storm surges . What is most important is that we understand that change is inevitable and that we identify approaches in land restoration that allow the marshes , and us , to adapt to those changes .
With funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation through the Emergency Coastal Resilience Fund 2019 , we have already done work to identify a practical approach to help protect the marshes . We released the Nature-Based Solutions Manual for Kiawah Island earlier this year to highlight different strategies using nature to enhance the resilience of humans and wildlife . For marshes , our focus was placed on promoting living shoreline practices , which prevent erosion . Similarly , upland practices to mitigate the impacts of stormwater runoff help to reduce disturbances within the marsh by lowering the volume and improving the quality of water flowing into the marsh from higher ground . As we work to spread awareness and implement these nature-focused approaches in conservation , our resilient marshes are given more opportunity to thrive and provide natural benefits to the entire ecological system , including us , along the coast .
