Where are you from? I grew up in Charleston, born and raised in West Ashley. I went to college at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, and recently returned to the Lowcountry.
How did you connect with the Conservancy? I’ m an Eagle Scout and met Jennifer Wilson, the Conservancy’ s Senior Communications Coordinator, around ten years ago through Scouts. I bumped into her at a recent meeting where I was helping run activities. I mentioned that I’ m about to graduate and she told me about an internship opening at the Conservancy. It sounded like an awesome opportunity.
What drew you to the internship? Definitely the opportunity to work for an organization that makes a difference. I like feeling that I’ ve made an impact. I worked the sweetgrass harvest and distribution this summer and saw firsthand how the Conservancy positively impacts the community. I was also excited about the creative side of the internship, taking pictures and videos. I was the president of the film club at Appalachian State and I’ m excited to put those skills to use for the Conservancy.
What do you love about the sea island ecosystem? I grew up here and was always running around the marsh and along the nature trail in my neighborhood. My family vacationed on Kiawah. What stands out is the diversity of wildlife in the Lowcountry: birds and aquatic species, the marsh with fiddler crabs, and such rich horticulture. The abundance of life that has always drawn me here.
What are you working on right now? My work focuses on social media for the Conservancy’ s education, outreach, and volunteer programs. I develop promotional posts and produce recap videos that highlight participants, volunteers, and the impact of their efforts on conserving our Sea Islands. In addition, I support Katie with organization, partner communications, and logistical coordination to ensure programs run smoothly.
What is it like working for the Conservancy? I’ ve loved it so far! It ' s so nice to get out in the field and be creative. I enjoyed interacting with everyone at the sweetgrass harvest. From employees to volunteers, everyone is super positive. I feel lucky to work in this beautiful environment.
