final resting place. With two million lime-stone blocks, weighing between 2 to 3 tons each, some 8000 tons of granite from a quarry 800 kilometres away......... this is a colossus in any standards. Till the Eiffel( 300m) came up 1889, Khufu ' s pyramid was the highest man-made structure in the world. ORION CORRELATION
Is there any link between Orion and the Giza pyramids? Many scholars believe so; the relative sizes and orientations of Giza pyramids are the exact replica of belt stars of Orion. The belt ' s westernmost star, Mintaka, is the dimmest of the three, and is deviated just a bit towards north from the straight line joining the other two. Looking from the sky the three pyramids almost replicates the belt stars. For many, the idea is quite far fetched. The jury is still out …. EGYPTIAN CALENDER
When goddess Isis, the wife of Osiris, rose the first time in the east at sunrise, after a seventy day disappearance, it marked the beginning of the Egyptian year in Akhet- the season of inundation. Soon the Nile ' s water level would rise to flood the banks. In a cloudless desert land, this was a miracle of sort.
For the first time in the history of mankind, the Egyptians had a 365 day year long calendar. And they had twelve 30 day long months with three weeks of 10 days each. Each week was ruled by a decan. The last five days were dedicated to feasting and worshipping the five principal gods-Osiris, Isis, Horus, Seth, and Nephthys.
After the flood water receded it was the planting and growing season for crops on the fertile land the season of Peret. Then came the season of harvest- Shemu. Akhet, Peret and Shemu- three seasons of four months each made up an Egyptian year. As the seasons came and went, the stars in the heavens guided the mortals on earth through their divinity in religion and other aspects of their everyday lives such as agriculture and labour. DENDERA ZODIAC
The temple dedicated to the goddess Hathor at Denderah is one of the best preserved ancient temples. In its heydays, it must have been a spectacular sight like any other Egyptian temple. Still preserved colourful ceiling and wall paintings are windows to that lost culture and faith of that great civilisation. The famous Dendera zodiac is one such ceiling painting of this very temple. A digitally restored image of the zodiac explains it all. The Dendera zodiac portrays very much the same constellations and planets which we are familiar with today.
