There is a human universal aspect of love. Of stories that people tell all around the world, the most common is a love story. The plot is often two lovers who long to be united and someone, typically a parent, opposes it. There is a tragic version like Romeo and Juliet in which the lovers die, perhaps to be reunited on some other plane. And then there’s a comic version in which they all live happily ever after. The story seems to be universal—and people certainly talk about falling in love in all sorts of societies.
But the particular kind of love that people are interested in the West is culturally more specific. It includes the idea of suddenly meeting a stranger and falling in love in an instant—there’s a Hollywood version of this kind of love. But this isn’t universal. Some cultures rely on parents to arrange a marriage, for example, and it is assumed that love will follow.
