ANTON PANN
1794/1798-1854
According to some accounts, his mother,
Tomaida, was an ethnic Greek, and his
father, Pantoleon Petrov, was Bulgarian,
known that he worked as a coppersmith
bucket-maker, which makes it likely that
he was a Rromani of the Kalderash caste.
The cantor, teacher, writer and printer is
considered the official author of the music
of the Romanian anthem “Wake up,
Romanian!”, but the song was added
Andrei Mureşanu's lyrics, which already
had a wide circulation in the era, so it is
believed that he did only collect the music.
He was a passionate collector and printer
of classical-Ottoman and Rromani music.
