Professor Hudson started with a long description of the family and the households, these ones complexly formed, and sometimes with a mother working outside the house. Plenty evidence of women’s work is also presented by Hudson, along with a description of the variety of jobs that women could work in. The family firm is suggested as a viable option for women to get involve in the business field. Finally, the industrialization and the gender roles are described by the author, concluding with the double burden that having to work meant to many women in the Victorian period.
Migration was a key element for Hudson, young people, especially young women migrated to cities looking for job opportunities.
