Roland. I was not well treated.
Paul. Were the teachers’ very strict.
Roland. It was the other boys who made life very hard for me.
Narrator. There is a silence. The boys look at each other. The swing begins to move backwards and
forwards again.
Edward. You like that swing, don’t you?
Roland. Yes. I had one in my garden. My happiest times were when I was alone on the
Swing with no one near to do me harm. Those times did not last long.
Edward. It’s cold, let’s go home.
Adrian. It’s much nicer here when it’s daylight.
Roland. I know. Many and many a day I have watched the children in this playground.
Simon. I thought ghosts could only come out at night.
Roland. By day I cannot be heard or seen. But I can watch the children playing here. I like that. They
reminded me of my garden and my swing.
Adrian. Have you watched me?
Roland. I have. I have often seen you and your friends here.
Edward. But you will never come here again.
Roland. No.
Narrator. There is the sound of footsteps along the street by the playground. They are approaching
quickly.
Adrian. I can hear voices.
Simon. So can I.
John. I know who it is.
Gavin. So do I. It’s the Baxter’s and Alan White!
Michael. Quick. Get out of here. I wish I had stayed at home. This is far too spooky for me.
John. You’re just afraid of the Baxter’s!!
Narrator. The two Baxter children and Alan White come into the playground.
Michael. It’s too late!!
Jim Baxter. Right you lot.
Colin Baxter. We warned you.
Jim Baxter.
We told you to stay away from here.
Colin Baxter. We say who plays on these swings and who doesn’t
Jim Baxter.
You’re on our patch.
Colin Baxter. Without permission
Jim Baxter.
So you’re for it!!!!
