The Quenzon City jail is the most overcrowded jail in the phillipines, it is 30,000 square feet of floor room. There are 4000 inmates and counting. Conditions inside are astounding. Every available space is crammed with yellow T-shirted humanity. Almost 60% are in for drug offenses these men spend the days sitting, squatting and standing in the unrelenting, suffocating Manila heat. There are only 20 guards per shift and inmates are woken at 5 a.m. before undergoing a head count then crammed into crumbling, ramshackle cells.At any rate, he adds, he feels "safer in here than out on the streets," where "the cops could kill you."
