river rafting
Glance towards the Bow and Elbow rivers
on any warm summer day and you’re sure to
find them dotted with fun-seekers on inflat-
able rafts. Locals love nothing more than a
leisurely float through the city on a hot day.
The Bow is bigger and faster moving, while
the Elbow is slower and shallower. If you’re
not sure how to jump right in, companies
such as The Paddle Station and Lazy Day Raft
Rentals can provide everything you need,
including advice.
boutiques
While Calgary’s malls host some of the
most sought-after brands and stores such as
Sephora, Coach and Nordstrom, there are
also boutique shopping districts offering
experiences and products that can’t be found
elsewhere. Inglewood is home to Calgary
designers KaaDiki and Lauren Bagliore, along
with denim powerhouse Espy Experience and
the incredible collection at Circa Vintage Art
Glass. In bohemian Kensington, visit Meraki
Supply Co. and Brooklyn Clothing Co. for the
gents, along with Purr Petite and Livingstone
& Cavell Extraordinary Toys for the littles.
You’ve come so far, now is your best chance
to experience Alberta’s history!
speakeasies
Prohibition is long gone, but speakeasy-style
bars—a vintage or retro vibe, nattily dressed
bartenders, and a focus on classically inspired
and crafted cocktails—have been enjoying
a renaissance in Calgary of late. At Betty
Lou’s Library, you actually need to do some
sleuthing to find the entrance (hint: a reserva-
tion will go a long way). Milk Tiger Lounge
specializes in classics, from the dark and bold
Old Fashioned to the light and fresh Sidecar, a
defining cocktail of the Prohibition era.
