ART
Canada House Gallery has been showcasing
Canadian artists for more than 40 years,
and boasts a massive collection of gorgeous
glasswork, paintings, contemporary Inuit
textiles and more. Mountain Galleries at
the Fairmont features major and mid-career
artists from across the country, such as
Shannon Ford and Randy Hayashi. At the
Willock & Sax Gallery, the collection runs the
gamut from 19th-century historical works to
contemporary art.
MARILYN MONROE
One of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel’s
most well-known guests was Marilyn
Monroe, who visited in 1953 while filming
River of No Return. The legendary blonde
bombshell injured her ankle shooting a scene
on the Bow River—just two days after having
sprained it by falling into the glacial Maligne
River in nearby Jasper National Park—and
spent six days recuperating at the hotel.
According to local lore, the bellhops would
toss a coin to see which of them would have
the honour of pushing Monroe’s wheelchair.
