The first Starbucks to open outside the United
States was in 1987 in Vancouver’s Waterfront
Station. Since then, the number of coffee
shops in Vancouver has exploded. Top choices
include Revolver, Milano, Matchstick, Prado,
Nemesis, Aubade and Timbertrain. For a stel-
lar cuppa joe served alongside sweet treats,
visit 49th Parallel, which serves Lucky’s
Doughnuts, or Beaucoup Bakery, for the city’s
best buttery croissants and pains au chocolat.
eURoPeAN cUISINe
The flavours of Europe are highlighted at some
of the most popular spots in town. CinCin,
Ask for Luigi, Italian Kitchen and Cinara all
serve Italian-inspired dishes. Le Crocodile, Les
Faux Bourgeois and L’Abattoir are known for
their French cuisine. Chambar’s menu takes
inspiration from Belguim, while Bauhaus’s
menu features German dishes. For Greek food,
The Greek by Anatoli is a prime destination,
and Stepho’s always has a crowd of eager
diners who don’t mind waiting in line.
ASIAN fLAVoURS
Asia’s influence is evident in many of Vancou-
ver’s most popular eateries. Vij’s consistently
wins awards for the best Indian resto in town.
Miku, Minami and Tojo’s all offer stellar
sushi and other Japanese favourites. Bao Bei,
Peaceful and Kirin serve unparalleled Chinese
dishes. Kissa Tanto combines Japanese and
Italian cuisine, while Ancora mixes Japanese
and Peruvian flavours, and Torafuku blends a
multitude of Asian tastes.

Ireland’s Guinness family—yes, of beer
fame—was instrumental in shaping the Van-
couver we know today. They purchased the
magnificent art deco–style Marine Building
in 1933, after massive cost overruns caused
the builder to go bankrupt. The family also
helped fund construction of the Lions Gate
Bridge, which connects Vancouver to the
North Shore, during the Great Depression.
