The Texas Revolution had started in October of 1835, at the
Battle of Gonzales. In 1836, George W. Fulton was a school
teacher in Indiana, when he heard about the Revolution in
Texas and joined their cause. But his trip to Texas took so
long (he arrived around August of 1836) that the war had
already ended months earlier at the Battle of San Jancinto
in April of that same year.
Fulton remains in Texas and 1837 he meets Henry Smith,
who is now Secretary of the Treasury of the new Republic
of Texas, which is now its own country. In 1840, Fulton
marries Smith’s daughter, Harriet Gillette Smith.
Texas Independence was short lived, and on December 29,
1845, President James Polk signed legislation that annexed
Texas as the 28th State of the United States of America.
Then came the American Civil War, which began in 1861
and ended in 1865. The Shellcrete Community of Lamar
was destroyed during the conflict by Union Naval bombardment.
In 1867, Colonel George W. Fulton returned to Texas and
founded the Town of Fulton.
