BROWN PELICAN
(sp. Pelecanus occidentalis)
It’s considered small for a Pelican, and
the Gulf of Mexico is full of them. You
can see them at our Harbors and at our
Rockport Beach and sitting on Piers, and
you might even see them diving for fish a habit that distinguishes them from other
Pelicans.
LORE: The Brown Pelican is
the National Bird of the Island of
Barbados.
LEGEND: PELICAN ON THE BOW
Most people know better than to bring
‘Bananas on a Boat’ - that’s common
knowledge around these parts. But of
all the Superstitions that extend through
our Coastal Waterways, there is none so
insidious as the ‘Pelican on the Bow’. If
you’ve never heard of it, that’s only because people don’t like talking about it.
A Pelican on the Bow of a Boat or Sea
Vessel is a direct threat to the Vessel and
its entire Crew. If the Pelican happens to
land on the Stern, then you have nothing
to worry about.
