In July of 2011, David Allgood (Artist) and his Uncle, Joe Allgood (Writer), visited the Aransas County
Historical Society to gather research material for the
book you’re reading right now. Kam Wagert informed
the Artist & Writer that the ‘Bring Back the Big Blue
Crab Comittee’ was accepting bids for a New Big
Blue, and that’s how David Allgood was accepted as
the Artist for the job.
First, David made a small model of Big Blue, which took longer
than he’d expected for it to. Then, in November of 2011, David
began building the ‘Full Size’ Big Blue. Again, it took longer than
the Artist had expected.
The Materials used to make ‘Big Blue’:
70 Gallons of Resin, 40 Rolls of Screen, 2,700 ft. of Aluminum
Rod & Tubing, 1 Big Roll of Fiberglass Matting, and, according
to the Artist, “about 2 Quarts of O Positive”.
It was in November 2011 that he began by welding together an
aluminum frame and covered that with aluminum screen, which
was in turn covered with fiberglass & resin. David didn’t paint
the Crab, but rather, he tinted the resin itself, using only black,
white, red, yellow & blue. He mixed his own colors as a true artist would.
Big Blue was mounted near the Ski Basin, right next to the Bay
Education Center, between Monday, August 20th and Saturday,
August 25th of 2012. And that’s how the ‘Big Blue Crab’ returned
to Rockport - true story.
