Epica The Quantum Enigma Rocío Echávarri (Deuzzy) A few editions ago we dedicated an article to this disc, but I wanted to return to it in a personal way because it is a magnificent album that has fascinated me and has made me join the ranks of Epica fans. This is a disc that defines symphonic metal and shows it in the full extension of the word. The orchestra and the chorus are not just an ornament, or a support for the band’s musicians, but they are homologated working as a whole. Even the vocalists, Simone and Mark, don’t have the full leadership, but they join a magnificent chorus that in some moments of this work are the main stars. The beginning of The Quantum Enigma surprises as with a strong and emotive introduction: Originem, in that moment we can notice the road that this work is going to take, getting away from the experimental Requiem for the Indifferent. Orchestra and chorus are in charge of guiding us when the group enters in a musical rapture to give pass to The Second Stone. This is the moment to listen to Simone with a great interpretation, and I had said before, she and the chorus get merged to make the vocal experience more pleasant to our ears. The intermediate is an audible delight in which we can hear the “grunts” of Mark, while the rhythmic base reverberates in our speakers leaving the orchestra in a second place in some moments, just to give more strength to this song. 6
