World Series Champs

The Philadelphia Athletics took home their fifth World Series Tuesday night. The trophy remains in Philadelphia for the second year in a row. Winning at home in front of 32,000 fans is a story book ending for this ball club. The series ended at 4-2 with an up and down series. The Athletics had the home field advantage so games 1 and 2 were held at Shibe Park, then the next three went to St. Louis before returning back to Philadelphia for what would only be Game 6.

Philadelphia started out the series strong with 2 home wins. Game 1 was 5-2, as Lefty Grove pitched a complete game. Game 2 was 6-1, as George Earnshaw pitched a complete game as well. These two complete games by the Athletics pitching staff helped later in the series with available pitchers.

Heading to St. Louis the Athletics had all the confidence in the world. It ended when Bill Hallahan pitched a shutout for the Cardinals and the Series was now 2-1. In Game 4, Jesse Haines and Lefty Grove went the distance as Jesse Haines outlasted Lefty in a 3-1 duel. The series was 2-2, leading up to a pivotal Game 5. Earnshaw got the start for the Athletics, but Lefty Grove came in late to get the win in a 3 hit shutout. Heading back to Philadelphia the Series was 3-2 in favor of the Athletics. The Cardinals needed to win 2 straight on the road to win the Series.

Game 6 ended early as the Athletics scored early and often. George Earnshaw pitched a complete game only giving up one run to clinch the World Series. It was a final score of 7-1 and the Series ended at 4-2.

The Championship trophy went back to Philadelphia for the fifth time. The Athletics are back-to-back World Series Champions and the uphill climb begins as they go for a three peat.
