It's All About the Money

2

Is the "Great Gatsby" written to show people how much money means to them? Is it written to tell peole that life deals with more than how much money you have? It is written in a way that puts multiple people into smaller groups. These groups are based on only money. Old money, new money, and no money at all. They even live in different places to show the different sections.

The people with little money were to live in the middle of East and West Egg. This place was called the Valley of Ashes. Those who lived here would live in their businesses second floor or share garages with others. This area provides horrible living conditions.

West Egg is for people with the new money. People who are more humble with what they have and aren't as greedy. People like Gatsby who have to work for a living and who started out rough. It was the home for those whose parents were poor and those who had to continue to work for what thye made. These people were generally the people who weren't rude to those without money. West Egg was grassy and had full trees and was good living grounds, but in society it was still behind.

East Egg is where those who have been rich their whole lives live. Those who have never worked because of the moeny that is being passed down from generation to generation. People who live in East Egg are aupposedly less-sophisticated than those in West Egg. The more stuck up side of the two Eggs is home to a family like the Buchanans with the ruch man in Tom and the greedy wife in Daisy. It's families and characteristics like these that make up most of East Egg.

These three sections of living divide up society. It divides it into the old money and greedier people, to the new money and those who work for what they have, to those who have very little money and not the best living conditions. It shows that no matter where you live people are still people and they should be treated the same whether they are rich or poor.
