TECHNICAL GEAR

Trekking Poles Lightweight and collapsible poles are recommended. Ski poles will also work.

Trekking Poles on Kilimanjaro It's not uncommon for climbers to finish their Kilimanjaro climb surprised at how much they relied on their trekking poles. Trekking poles help you keep your balance while navigating the rocky and uneven terrain on the ascent and provide enormous benefit on the descent. We have learned that taking a little weight off of your knees on the descent makes a huge difference over the course of the day. Look for a pole that is adjustable and sturdy, but lightweight. It's a good idea to pad the tips of the trekking pole when packing for the flight to protect the rest of your gear and the bag. See more tips about climbing and training with trekking poles on the RMI Blog.

Headlamp Be sure to begin your program with fresh batteries.

Headlamp Tips

A headlamp with a bright beam is needed. Most headlamps use LED bulbs and are very efficient with batteries, but carrying a spare set of batteries is a good idea. You'll be using your headlamp around camp in the evenings and during our early alpine start on summit day.
