Backpack We recommend bringing two packs: a 40+ liter pack for the climb, and a 25+ liter daypack to be used as a carry on and while game viewing and hiking.

Pack Tips A slightly larger capacity pack is best for use on the mountain. More room inside allows you to dig around in the pack without needing to pull items out and set them on the slope. We have found that a cheap and effective way to waterproof your pack is to simply line it with a garbage bag and then pack everything inside to keep the contents dry.

Check out Whittaker Mountaineering's Backpack Guide for the specifics of finding the right pack.

Two Duffels Before heading onto the mountain, we'll repack our gear into two duffel bags, a "Mountain Duffel" and a "Stay Duffel." Your Mountain Duffel will be carried by a porter and is packed with all of the gear you need on the mountain. This includes your extra clothing, toiletries, sleeping bag, and other personal items. While we place the Mountain Duffel in a rubber "dry bag," it's also a good idea to line it with a garbage bag as additional protection against anything getting wet. Keep in mind that the Mountain Duffel must weigh less than 15kg (33lbs). The Stay Duffel will remain at the hotel in a locked storage area and is packed with your travel and safari clothes, as well as items not needed on the climb. It's a good idea to bring small travel locks for both duffel bags.
