On behalf of the East London Boating Association , I wish to welcome you to the 2022 RMB Buffalo Regatta . It is indeed a privilege to host such a prestigious and historical event , showcasing our beautiful city and providing an overdue , well-deserved opportunity for our national rowers to race in a world-class event .
It is astonishing , when glancing at the Winner ’ s Board dating back to 1881 , that the event was only interrupted by two World Wars , and COVID-19 in 2021 . With this in mind , the build-up to the 134th event was initially approached with much trepidation , in the fear of another lockdown and associated restrictions . However , as we drew closer to the event , trepidation turned to excitement , and once again made us realise what a pivotal role sport plays in our daily lives .
Thank you to our main sponsor RMB , to the Eastern Cape Development Corporation and Buffalo City Tourism , for their financial support , without which this event cannot take place . We are also grateful to Transnet for their willingness to accommodate our logistical requirements during the event .
The past year was not a total write-off . We are pleased to showcase our brand-new Regatta Control building , constructed with the support of RMB , the Eastern Cape Development Corporation , the Eastern Cape Gambling Board , TFM and GHN Maintenance .
Without the dedication and unselfish effort of the appointed ELBA Committee , as well as so many parents and volunteers , who all work tirelessly behind the scenes , this Regatta will not continuously exceed expectations , and we thank each and every one of you . Finally , to ROWSA and all the officials , your time and commitment is greatly appreciated .
Rowing is a growing sport in East London , and we welcome two new clubs that joined ELBA during the past two years . A special word of thanks to all coaches and staff for your immense effort in preparing for the upcoming Regattas .
In conclusion , to the participants : Be strong when you are weak , brave when you are scared , and humble when you are victorious . May you be rewarded for your efforts when you race , but most importantly may fellowship and good sportsmanship
