Fiesta. This trusty runabout is the car many of us learned to drive in and, indeed, subsequently became out first cars. In various forms it has also been a compact performance machine and budget racing car, and over its seven generations the Fiesta has topped the British new car sale charts for year after year. There should be a fantastic line-up of Fiestas in all their iterations present that every visitor can relate to in one way or another.
It’ s also 50 years since the Volkswagen Golf GTI burst on to the scene and created the‘ hot hatchback’ genre of performance car. The earliest and the latest GTIs will be on show to fire up nostalgia.
And it’ s an amazing 60 years since the Ford GT40 broke the dominance of Ferrari at Le Mans and achieved a 1-2-3 finish at the fearsome French 24-hour race. These cars are back together and in the UK, and will be together as a‘ pack’ for a very rare reunion.
For many car fans, a multi-million pound supercar is the stuff of fantasy. This is why a fabulous line-up of supercars and hypercars is an essential part of the St James’ s Motoring Spectacle experience. But while the
waist-high lines and 200mph-plus performance are the stuff of dreams, the advanced engineering of these astounding cars often points to the future, with zero emissions and low-carbon sustainability increasingly byproducts of the creative thought that goes into them. As a continuation of that theme, a strong element of the Spectacle is devoted to education and careers. There are a wide variety of organisations taking part that can capture youthful enthusiasm and point it in the direction of a promising working life. This could be in creating the design and transport solutions for cars and other vehicles in the future, or even perfecting new techniques and skills that conserve and enhance Britain’ s rich motoring heritage – so much of which has had the influence of the Royal Automobile Club running through it.
The St James’ s Motoring Spectacle is definitely an experience you won’ t want to miss. There will be up to 150 extraordinary vehicles on show, so make it a part of a wonderful autumn weekend in the heart of London on 31 October. And just to reiterate, entry is absolutely free for everyone.-
