Several hundred voiturettes were made , with a range of bodies . In 1903 , a new factory produced fourwheeled cars with a conventional four-cylinder engine .
Locomobile and Locomobile steam Amzi Lorenzo Barber and John Brisbane Walker registered the Locomobile Company of America at Watertown , Massachusetts , USA , and the first Locomobiles were really Stanleys . Barber and Walker soon disagreed , and in 1900 Walker set up in Tarrytown , New York , to build Mobiles . Meanwhile , Barber consolidated Locomobile production in Bridgeport , Connecticut , making a lightweight steam Runabout . By 1902 , these were made sturdier , but the company soon went over to petrol-driven cars .
Lutzmann Lutzmann employed only about 20 workers in his factory in Dessau , much less than his competitors Daimler and Benz . The company itself did not trade until December 1898 , under the name Anhaltische Motorwagenfabrik . The Lutzmann motor vehicle was offered in at least 14 different variants .
MMC Harry J Lawson , entrepreneur and promoter of the first London to Brighton Run in 1896 , created The Great Horseless Carriage Company Ltd in Coventry , England in 1897 . By 1898 , this had become The Motor Manufacturing Company Ltd . This was based in part of The Motor Mills , which housed various motor manufacturers . George Iden joined the company , and in 1899 new designs were available with rearmounted horizontal-twin engines . By 1902 , the engines were front-mounted with one , two or four cylinders .
Marot Gardon By 1899 , this company moved on from making tricycles and quads to a voiturette with a single-cylinder 3hp engine . In 1900 , this was increased to 4.5hp , and in 1901 a two-seater 6hp chain-driven model and a 7hp racing voiturette were available .
Maxim The London General Automobile Company Limited gave the name Maxim to a car designed by Hiram Stevens Maxim , who invented the Maxim gun . It had a twin-cylinder , 16hp , T-head Fafnir engine , three-speed gearbox and a double chain drive . The company ran from 1902 to 1905 .

Maxwell The Maxwell-Briscoe Motor Co of Tarrytown , New York , USA commenced production in 1904 , when 10 cars were built . Mounted under a bonnet in the front of the chassis was a lusty twin-cylinder horizontally opposed engine with powered inlet valves and planetary two-speed transmission .
Mercedes The Mercedes cars were born from a request from Wilhelm Jellinek to Daimler for a more powerful model with a lower centre of gravity , after a 24hp Daimler crashed in the 1900 La Turbie hillclimb , killing the driver . The resultant design appeared in late 1900 , and Jellinek called it after his daughter , Mercedes . It still required refinement , but during 1901 made its name in competitions . The famous 40 and 60 made their mark between 1901 and 1903 .
Mercedes Simplex The Mercedes Simplex was designed by Wilhelm Maybach in Stuttgart , Germany from 1902 until 1909 . It featured powerful engines ranging from 40 to 60hp .
Minerva The Minerva was a prominent Belgian luxury automobile manufactured from 1902 until 1938 . Minerva started out manufacturing standard safety bicycles in 1897 , before in 1900 expanding into light cars and ‘ motocyclettes ’, particularly motorised bicycles , which were a forerunner of motorcycles .
Mors Developing from electrical work , Emile Mors built a Brasier-designed car in 1895 . By 1898 , it had made about 200 . There were many successful models . Henri Brasier then moved to Georges Richard in 1901 .
