Oldsmobile Ransom Eli Olds built experimental cars from 1887 . In 1898 , he moved to Detroit , USA , and started work on the Olds Runabout . The factory was destroyed by fire and only one prototype Curved Dash was rescued . Future production was then based on this car . In 1901 , 425 were made . That rose to 2100 in 1902 , 4000 in 1903 , 5500 in 1904 and 6500 in 1905 – making Oldsmobile the largest car manufacturer in the world from 1903 to 1905 .
Orient The Waltham Manufacturing Company in Massachusetts , USA , was formed by CH Metz . It made petrol ( Orient Buckboard ), steam and electric vehicles .
Panhard et Levassor René Panhard met Emile Levassor as a student , and by 1872 they were working together . The factory in Paris produced a batch of four identical cars in 1891 , 15 in 1892 , 37 in 1893 and 41 in 1894 . This made Panhard et Levassor the world ’ s first marque of car in continuous production .
Peerless Recognised as a leading American marque , these cars were built in Cleveland , Ohio . By 1903 , they had channel-section steel frames dropped in the centre to give a lower centre of gravity .
Peugeot Armand Peugeot started in 1880 with a prototype motor car , and in 1891 at Valentigney , France , made a batch of five cars – each slightly different . He had been in contact with Gottlieb Daimler and Emile Levassor , and agreed to make cars with a Daimler concept engine made by Panhard et Levassor under licence . By 1895 , Peugeot had decided to make his own engines . Tiring of the family firm , he started SA des Automobiles Peugeot at Audincourt in 1897 , then Paris from 1900 onwards . Peugeot produced 323 cars in 1899 and 500 in 1900 . The light cars had rear-mounted engines , while the heavier types had engines under the front seat . Phebus Manufactured by Noe Boyer et Cie in Sureness , Seine , Phebus tricycles were initially built under this name using Aster engines , and then twoseater 3.5hp voiturettes were made with two-speed transmission . The first cars were imported into Britain as Automobilettes .
Phoenix There are several marques known as Phoenix , the most well-known made a tricycle called Phoenix Trimo powered by a Minerva engine .
Pope-Toledo One of Colonel Pope ’ s enterprises was the International Bicycle Company in Toledo , Ohio , USA . It made two models of petrol-driven cars in 1904 , a 14hp twin-cylinder and a 24hp four-cylinder .
Rambler Two Englishmen , Thomas B Jeffery and R Philip Gormully , made bicycles in Chicago in the 1890s . They also had a factory in Coventry , England . After the death of Gormully in 1900 , Jeffery and his son bought a large factory in Kenosha , Wisconsin . They produced the Model C with a single-cylinder engine under the seat and single chain drive , and automatic advance and retard . In 1902 , 1500 sold at $ 750 each . The single-cylinder continued until 1905 with increased engine and wheelbase , and twin-cylinder cars in 1904 , when 3342 were produced .
Raynaud Based in Flayosc in the Southern Var region of France , roughly 40 miles inland from St Tropez , between Marseille and Cannes , Claude Raynaud ran an electric engineering business . The Raynaud may well be the only car of its kind because it is believed that Mr Raynaud ’ s vehicle was intended for his own personal use . It is not known whether Raynaud ’ s plan would have been to further expand his collection or in turn expand it into a business venture .
