BOTANICS DR. NATHANIEL WARD WASN’T ABLE TO KEEP HIS PLANTS ALIVE, DUE MAINLY TO THE INDUSTRIAL NATURE OF LONDON, HE DISCOVERED BY CHANCE THAT HEALTHY PLANTS WERE ABLE TO GROW IN JARS WITH DIRT RESIDUE IN THEM. 218 The history of terrariums dates back to the 1830’s in London. Since Dr. Nathaniel Ward wasn’t able to keep his plants alive, due mainly to the industrial nature of London, he discovered by chance that healthy plants were able to grow in jars with dirt residue in them. After this coincidental observation, Wardium Cases, the first prototypes of terrariums were brought to life. With them, plants were able to survive longer in their natural habitats and they were easier to transport from place to place. Wh B&RF
