E
ven though you probably can’t
move your office to the forest in
order to treat your lungs with fresh
air, you can easily grow a miniature
forest on top of your desk. These small
habitats, called terrariums, can be decorative
gardens bringing new life to the best places in
your home… all within just a glass jar. The
word “terrarium” derives from the Latin
“terra,” which means “land” and “arium,”
which comes from the word “aquarium.”
No doubt that with these mini-worlds within
jars, we can fulfill our longings for nature.
A lot more than just a decorative object,
terrarium are essentially a tiny ecosystem
with limited growth tropical plants. Vapor
exuded out of the plants comes back down
as “rain,” which then delivers the water
needed for the plants. The translucent shell
of the glass bottle or jar allows light to hit
the plants, thus providing the light needed in
photosynthesis for growth. In all, terrariums
are completely self-sufficient systems.

Latince “toprak”, “arium” da “aquarium”
yani “akvaryum” kelimesinden geliyor. Hiç

Terrarium aslında dekoratif amaçlı bir
objeden ziyade çok fazla büyümeyen tropik
bitkilerin yer aldığı bir ekosistem. Bitkilerden
buharlaşan su, yağmur gibi tekrar üzerlerine
yağıyor ve böylece bitkiler ihtiyaç duydukları
suyu alıyorlar. Bir şişe, kavanoz veya fanustan
oluşan dış duvar, ışığı kesmediği için fotosentez döngüsünü engellemiyor. Böylece kendi
kendine yeten bir sistem oluşuyor.
