hen Abel Giandellini purchased a
modest café in 1917, he didn’t know it
was quickly going to gain favor with
the theatre community. Soon after its
opening Mario Gallati joined Monsieur Abel in the role
of Maitre d’ and was instrumental in transforming The
Ivy. The subsequent redevelopment of the restaurant
produced a dining room, which largely resembles the
restaurant as it is today. The name itself originated
from a chance remark by the actress Alice Delysia, who
overheard Monsieur Abel apologize to a customer for the
inconvenience caused by building works. When he said
that it was because of his intention to make a restaurant
of the highest class, she interjected ‘Don’t worry – we
will always come and see you. “We will cling together
like the ivy,”’ a line from a popular song. Later, The Ivy
passed through several hands and gone through several
renovations to be restored to its former glory, it is always
London’s favorite theatre restaurant.
Abel Giangellini; 1917 yılında kendi halinde bir kafeyi
satın aldığında, tiyatro topluluğu arasında kısa sürede

“Endişelenme, biz her zaman seni görmeye geliriz.” diyerek ardından popüler bir şarkının dizelerini mırıldanır:
“Tıpkı bir sarmaşık gibi birbirimize bağlıyız.” The Ivy,
zaman içinde farklı kişilerin eline geçer ve eski ihtişamını yaşatabilmek için pek çok renovasyon yapılarak
her zaman Londra’nın favori tiyatro restoranı konumunu
muhafaza eder.
