208 HAIR LOUNGE SPOTLIGHT her offshoot program under the flag of the Cancer Crusaders organization. She says it’s been an invaluable opportunity to meet people and to put her skills to good use for those who need them most. She now organizes one event every other month in Cambridge where patients from all over the state are invited to get their hair and makeup done and learn how to care for their skin. Ashley sends out flyers to Mora, Milaca, and Cambridge hospitals, inviting them to send any patients experiencing the hardships of cancer to participate. She utilizes a room in Cambridge hospital to offer the service. If patients are losing their hair, Ashley will fit them for a wig that they get to take home for everyday use. The entire day is focused on pampering them and sending everyone home with some free goodies they can use to look good and feel better. It’s also an invaluable opportunity to meet others who are going through the same experiences. In order to provide the service, an aesthetician or cosmetologist license is required. Ashley has managed to recruit two retired licensees to assist her in carrying out the program over the years. Although the program is on hold due to the pandemic, Ashley looks forward to starting up again as soon as she is able. In the meantime, she is still putting her time to good use. While Ashley’s salon was shut down for 72 days in accordance with state restrictions, she was entirely without income for the duration of the closure. Fortunately, this didn’t inhibit her from supporting her staff and staying involved in the community. She began using the materials that she would normally donate to her outpatient beauty care program to make baskets, and she sold the baskets to raise funds to help local cancer patients and displaced staff. Since reopening, Ashley has struggled with the new regulations in place. Some staff have needed to take additional time off because wearing face masks all day causes difficulty breathing. It’s also been a concern that every member of the team has an immediate family member with underlying health issues that put them in the highrisk category for COVID. She relates that although the measures are inconvenient, it does make her feel assured that her family and her staff’s families will remain safe because of it. Ashley began working with Nesbit about a year ago when she needed insurance for her demolition and restoration company. Her then broker had been unable to underwrite a policy for the company after weeks of trying, and Ashley had a job coming up that week. If the insurance were not secured in time, she would lose the contract. Alisha at Nesbit signed her onto a policy within 48 hours. Ashley notes that Alisha was also able to quickly identify the holes in the salon and boat policies she held with the previous broker and promptly connected her with more appropriate coverage. Ashley also uses Nesbit for her life insurance, automobile, and mechanic policies. Not only has the agency played an integral role in coverage for Ashley’s businesses but she’s also referred many of the girls at the salon to purchase their own insurance through Nesbit. So far she’s received nothing but positive feedback. When COVID hit, Nesbit gave Ashley a percentage of all her vehicle premiums back to help support her throughout her business closure. Ashley commends Nesbit for their availability to answer questions and modify policies as needed. Alisha always makes herself available to chat through issues, especially during her monthly hair appointment at 208. + 5
