HOLLANDIA POOLS & SPAS The Art Of Pool Design: Hollandia Pools & Spas W ith the summer months quickly approaching, it’s the time of year when people will start looking for ways to cool off. Among other things, that includes relaxing in pools or taking advantage of local or national water parks. One thing that rarely crosses most people’s minds, however, is where those pools come from. Of course they are built — they don’t just appear out of thin air — but it may surprise you to learn that there are construction companies out there that specialize in the creation of pool design and implementation. One of the leading companies filling that role in Canada is Hollandia Pools & Spas out of Ontario. Starting out as Hollandia Gardens, Ltd. in 1950, it incorporated in 1953 as a family business operating in the landscape industry. John Guldemond, the founder, was trained as a landscape architect. His designs frequently called for backyard swimming pools. Unfortunately, there were no local pool builders in his area, 26 so he took it upon himself to carry out the construction of those designs. Over the years, the process has shifted from fibreglass construction to the use of structural concrete, allowing more unique and durable forms. Ownership was passed on to Walter Schmoll in 1982, current owner and president, and in 2015, Todd McCormick came on as a partner and shareholder in the business. What sets Hollandia apart from other companies is their holistic method of design and construction. They handle the complete service, from the initial contact and design to the construction of the pool using their own in-house team. Not only can the staff design swimming pools but they also design the landscapes that will go around them. Furthermore, they are able to design mechanical systems which exceed industry standards. After each job is complete, the client is contacted by the Post Construction Services Department to help with startup and detailed training. Currently, the company is placing its focus on high-end concrete and vinyl- lined pool construction, backed by a service department which encompasses both residential and commercial pools and a retail department to provide supplies and materials. With a full-time staff of 80 persons, multiple jobs can be undertaken at once with the highest level of professionalism possible while staying on time and on budget. At the core, the company is about their principles. They respect the property of the customers they service and work towards 100 percent conformance to contract work on every job. Rather than doing the bare minimum, Hollandia strives to exceed the expectations of customers by providing reliable service with stellar communication both internally and externally. Whether it’s Class “A” pools for FINA competitions or YMCAs, Class “B” pools for fitness clubs and hotels, or a pool for your backyard, Hollandia has you covered.
