STANDING IN
THEIR MAIN BARN
A Tradition Of Excellence:
Sancor Farms
S
ancor Farms is an Ontario-
based dairy farm owned and
operated by Corjan and Sandra
Doornenbal. Originally from
Holland, they have had a long
history of farming. In 2003, they sold
their farm in Holland, moved to Canada,
and started Sancor Farms to provide
dairy to nearby dairy plants and the local
community. Starting with sixty cows, they
have expanded significantly since their
small start, now raising over 220 cows for
milking.
Some of the most surprising things about
the farm are also the most charming.
Corjan and Sandra have managed to
run the large operation mostly on
their own, with the help of one full-
time employee during the week. Over
weekends, they handle the work on their
own. They try to use as many automated
systems as they can in order to lessen
the burden on employees and shorten
their own workload. One example of this
automation is an automatic feed system
which comes from a feed kitchen, allowing
a three-day feed so other tasks can be
taken care of. This also allows them to get
some much-needed time away to spend
with family when they need it.
In terms of volume, with over two
hundred cows, there is plenty of milk
being turned out each day. During the
heaviest production times of the year,
between 7,000 and 7,200 liters of output
a day can be expected. This milk will
be distributed to local dairy plants and
the community. For a local farm, the
local community is of great importance.
Sancor doesn’t produce any dairy products
themselves, other than the milk, letting
larger and more specialised operations
handle that once Sancor ships the milk
out.
Another thing Sancor does differently
than other dairy farms is the type of
cows that they use. They crossbreed cows
themselves, utilising two specific breeds:
Montbéliarde from France and Swedish
Red from Sweden. The Swedish Red are
a breed primarily known for their dairy
production. Likewise, Montbeliarde are
of a similar stock, used often to produce
dairy for cheese-making. Both breeds
are very hardy and their crossbreed
produces stronger and sturdier cows than
the typical breeds used in Canada. This
imparts a unique flavor to the milk and
gives Sancor a step up in terms of utility.
