SMARTTRAVEL APP
City of Edmonton
Launches Free
Driver Safety App
A Look At SmartTravel App
T
he city of Edmonton recently launched its own
driver safety mobile application—the Edmonton
SmartTravel app. The app is hands-free and is
designed to verbally warn drivers of school zones,
speed limit changes and areas where collisions are
common.
The government has said the app complies with distracted
driving legislation and can be used whenever drivers take to the
road.
According to the most recent statistics, the number of traffic
fatalities in Alberta increased 3.1 per cent from 2013 to 2014.
Additionally, in Edmonton alone, there were 3,033 trafficrelated injuries in 2015.
City of Edmonton Councillor Bev Esslinger has stated that the
new app helps contribute to the city’s long-term goal of reducing
the number of traffic fatalities to zero.
The government has stressed that, while the app provides a
number of important and helpful warnings related to safe
driving, drivers should not solely rely on the app for instruction.
As always, drivers are accountable for being safe and attentive,
and for following all posted speed limits and traffic regulations.
The app can be downloaded for free on both iOS and Android
devices. For more industry specific news, contact Lloyd Sadd
