KEN PILON
Meet Ken Pilon

en Pilon of Knight Archer
Insurance passed a milestone
on September 2nd. That is
when he celebrated twenty
years of success within the life
insurance profession. There tends to be a
high turnover rate with new agents in the
life insurance business, so we asked Ken
how he managed to maintain such a track
record. His response was very succinct
and to the point. “Because I care about my
clients,” he said.
Ken has always believed in life insurance.
He bought his first policy when he was just
eighteen years old. “And I remember the
letter that came with it,” Ken said. “The
agent congratulated me for creating an
estate. Imagine how proud I was to be only
eighteen years old with an estate!”
Since then, Ken’s career has been varied,
including extended times in sales with both
Canadian General Electric and Canadian
dairy producers. He has spent time as a
will- and estate-planner, he is a life member
of the Kinsmen Club of Yorkton, and he
currently sits as the chairperson of the
REALM Foundation. It is clear that Ken’s
community is important to him, too.
Quite often when meeting with parents,
Ken tells them he is actually working to
protect their children! And he knows of
what he speaks. He was only twenty-five
when two family members were killed by a
drunk driver. As a cancer survivor, he can
relate to clients that have health concerns.
And as a family man, he can relate to his
clients with understanding and compassion.
He tries to bring this experience to every
client meeting, which explains why he
believes so strongly in his holistic approach.
But Ken knows that life insurance can
protect more than just families. Ken
has also worked extensively with small
business owners to help them transition
their business from one generation to the
next. And when approached properly, these
transitions can be done in a very tax-
efficient manner.
“FAIR IS NOT
ALWAYS EQUAL,
AND EQUAL IS
NOT ALWAYS FAIR,”
KEN SAYS GENTLY
AS HE HELPS HIS
CLIENTS REACH A
BALANCE INSIDE
THAT EQUATION.
But business transitioning can be a
very touchy subject for many reasons.
There is the personal connection to the
business. Many start-up owners see
business transition as giving away a piece
of themselves. Ken understands that. And
when the business moves to the next
generation, parents want to be fair with
their children who are working with them,
but they also feel the need to leave assets
to the children not in the business. This is
where Ken’s expertise shines.
