Thank you all for the great feedback and suggestions for topics and articles! Keep those suggestions coming to [email protected]. As I write this note to you we are just finishing one of the most destructive and costliest hurricane seasons in US history. Hurricane season starts on June 1st and runs all the way through November 30th every year. For the first time since 2005, four hurricanes made US landfall in one season. For the first time in recorded history, which dates to 1851, three Category 4 storms with sustained winds in excess of 130 miles per hour made landfall in the United States and its territories in the same year. WELCOME On August 25th Hurricane Harvey hits the Houston area and is responsible for at least 75 deaths. Harvey dumped an estimated 27 trillion gallons of rain over Texas and Louisiana during a six-day period, according to WeatherBell, and also set a record for the most rainfall ever from a tropical cyclone in the continental US, at 51 inches of rain. Estimates put the eventual total loss at $75 billion. On September 6th Hurricane Irma hits the US Virgin Islands, and then makes landfall in the Florida Keys as a Category 4 storm on September 10th. Initial estimates are that 25% of houses on the island chain are destroyed, and 65% have major damage. Irma travels north and pummels the West Coast of Florida and the Naples area for even more devastation. Hurricane Irma is responsible for 87 deaths in the US and its territories. On September 20th After destroying many of the US Virgin Islands, Hurricane Maria makes landfall in Puerto Rico as a Category 4 hurricane. It is the strongest storm to hit Puerto Rico in 85 years. As of this writing (almost a month later) only 12% of Puerto Rico has power and restoring the power grid will take months. Only 40 percent of the island currently has running water. The US death toll from Hurricane Maria remains at 34 in Puerto Rico. This time of year is often referred to as the “Season of Giving”. For a variety of personal reasons people tend to give more in the 4th quarter of the year than at any other time. There are many families in the US and its territories whose homes, businesses, livelihoods that have been destroyed due to these natural disasters. If you are inclined to give to charities in any form (monetary, or volunteering your time), there are many Americans in dire need. Below are a few suggested charities (as recommended by Consumer Reports) that will go to those directly affected by these terrible storms. TEAM RUBICON “Disasters are our business.
