TEMPCO GLASS
JOHNSON CHEN:
A LEADER IN COMMERCIAL GLASS
AND METAL FENESTRATION
BY: GWENYTH P. LUU, CLCS , DIRECTOR - COMMERCIAL LINES, JGS INSURANCE
Johnson Chen is the CEO of both
Tempco Glass and GAMCO
Corporation, which serves
the glass fabrication needs of
local glaziers, glass shops, and
manufacturers. The companies were
founded in 1986, manufacturing a variety
of custom quality fenestration systems
and architectural metal components for
commercial, institutional, and residential
properties. Their products are used
prominently on high rise structures.
Johnson does not see other companies
as competitors. Most companies in the
glass and metal fenestration industries
do operate competitively, but Johnson
prefers to view others in the industry as
peers. This mindset feeds into his outlook
as a business leader and his decision to
build a partnership with JGS Insurance.
A defining moment in the partnership
was when JGS successfully delivered an
alternative insurance program in less
than a week’s time to replace his program
that was set to non-renew. There were so
many complicated issues to work through
in so little time. Johnson feared that he
would have to endure high-cost insurance
premiums with restrictive coverage terms
that would have had a negative impact
on his contractual obligations with his
clients. Johnson was able to witness the
passion and commitment across varying
functions from team members of Account
Management, Risk Control, to Claims
in simplifying those complicated issues
and delivered the right solution to his
company. He knew at that moment JGS
would be the right advocate to support
his business for those unforeseeable
times.
COVID did not impact Johnson's business
as significantly as other industries,
although he did continue to operate
when many of his industry peers had
opted to close. Staying open to keep
his team employed and available for
repairs as they were urgently needed was
important to Johnson throughout the
pandemic.
In response to a growing need for
sanitary barriers in commercial buildings,
Tempco began manufacturing and
installing antimicrobial plexiglass
partitions. This played an integral
role in executing reopening strategies
across New York. The new Invisiguard
Glass Partition System quickly became
an essential for upscale firms; unlike
aesthetically displeasing acrylic or
polycarbonate materials, the partition's
true glass elegance accentuates the
workplace décor.
The Invisiguard Glass Partition System
is designed with simplicity, ease of
installation, flexibility, elegance, and
effectiveness in mind. It can be adapted
for virtually any office, retail, commercial,
or institutional setting.
Since its introduction, these systems have
been installed in numerous commercial,
healthcare, and retail environments. To
support the reopening of local businesses
in the NYC area, Tempco donated this
product to various organizations such as
temples, small glazing shops, restaurants,
various small businesses, and medical
offices.
During these unprecedented times, JGS
has kept Johnson and his team informed
on the various New York State and
Federal guidance to assist in protecting
his employees, clients, and workplace.
JGS worked with Johnson’s team to
implement CDC’s critical workplace
guidance and strategies including prescreening,
monitoring, social distancing,
and workplace disinfecting.
At the end of the day, Johnson has peace
of mind that his partnership with JGS
will be there to navigate any unchartered
territory as he continues to grow both his
companies. +
