SOCIAL ENGINEERING CRIMES
Employers are just now beginning to become more aware of these schemes and are taking pains to educate their workforces through targeted training initiatives and implementation of written policies governing information disclosure . The possibility of infiltration must , unfortunately , become part of the corporate culture so that everybody feels charged with the responsibility of protecting the company from predators .
In British Columbia , the government has stepped in by establishing the Personal Information Protection Act ( PIPA ) which mandates how private sector organizations must handle the personal information of its employees and customers . This legislation includes common-sense rules about collecting , using , and disclosing information based on the competing principles of information collection to provide a service and information protection to keep confidential material away from cyber criminals . PIPA also requires
that procedures be in place to receive and respond to complaints and answer questions about data collection and usage . In addition , a compliance officer must be identified who will act as the main point person and ensure that documentation is up-to-date .
Since corporations are legally responsible for all personal information in their control , even if used by third parties , there are a number of steps they can take to ensure proper protection . For example , tracking each type of information — where it was originated , by whom , and for what reason — can be vital in helping to better protect and secure it . Also , obtaining the proper type and amount of insurance coverage will help you recover from what can be very costly infractions . It ’ s a common mistake to depend on your business liability insurance for coverage against cyber crimes . ONE INFECTIOUS LINK . ONE INVITING EMAIL . ONE INTRIGUING SITE .

Cyber attacks come in all shapes and sizes . A massive data breach was set off by a malicious virus that wormed its way inside a company ’ s computer network . A major hospital ’ s weeklong loss of access to its email and electronic health records most likely began with a click .
Just think about the damaging consequences of this kind of intrusion . Since the average cost of a data breach has continued to rise , it ’ s something your business should take seriously .
