The future is bright .
Do you ever read or watch the news and end up feeling slightly depressed ? Disasters , tragedy , and scandals make great headlines and riveting television , and if that ’ s all you read or watch , you might agree with the 81 percent of Trump supporters who believe that they are much worse off today than they were in the 1950s . This attitude is the focus of a new book by Swedish economic historian Johan Norberg titled Progress : Ten Reasons to Look Forward to the Future . In his book , Norberg suggests that human beings are predisposed to think that they are worse off than they are and overstate the likelihood of a calamity since such events are easier to recall and not because of actual data .
Mr . Norberg presents a mountain of evidence to illustrate that , in fact , most of the world ’ s people are substantially better off today than fifty — or even twenty — years ago , and things continue to get better for most of us . Wars , catastrophes , and acts of violence still occur , but their frequency and the intensity of human suffering they have caused has decreased dramatically in the last one hundred years or so . Here are some examples :
• Global poverty has fallen by 50 percent in the last twenty years .
• Forty million planes landed safely last year .
• The average IQ has risen from 100 to 118 since the 1950s .
• A vaccine for swine flu was created in months .
• The only form of violence that is rising is terrorism , and even then , it turns out we are ten times more likely to die by falling down stairs than to be killed by a terrorist .
Of course , we still have plenty of room for improvement . Not everyone is better off or as better off as he or she could be . That said , if past history is any indication , we can expect the world to continue to become more prosperous , smarter , more tolerant , and we will live longer and healthier in a much safer world .
