FREDERICTON STRONG Fredericton Strong O n August 10, 2018, at approximately 7:10 a.m., the city of Fredericton, New Brunswick, woke up to a major tragedy. During the morning of August 10, 2018, 45-year-old Cst. Lawrence Robert (Robb) Costello and 43-year-old Cst. Sara Mae Helen Burns were killed while responding to a report of gunfire at an apartment complex at 237 Brookside Drive on the city’s north side. Two Fredericton residents, 42-year-old Donald Adam Robichaud and 32-year-old Bobbie Lee Wright, also lost their lives. The two officers were the first on the scene and weregunned down as they approached Robichaud and Wright. A 48-year-old Fredericton man, Matthew Vincent Raymond, was charged on the morning of August 11, 2018, with four counts of first-degree murder. A Regimental Funeral for Cst. L. Robb Costello and Cst. Sara Mae Helen Burns was held on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at one o’clock in the afternoon at the Aitken University Centre. Over 1,000 family members, friends, first responders, and dignitaries from across Canada joined together in a service filled with personal stories of the deceaseds’ love and dedication to their jobs. Although the funeral wasn’t open to the public, it didn’t stop people from lining the rain-swept streets of Fredericton along the route of the funeral procession of about 1,400 first responders. The procession started at noon at Fredericton High School and moved along Priestman Street to Regent Street, down to Montgomery Street and across to the University of New Brunswick campus. examples of community support involved gifts such as flowers and cards being left outside the Fredericton police station. Banner signings, a bike rally, a visit from the Prime Minister, and donations to the families are just a few of the many other ways the community has shown its support towards the victims of this tragedy and their families. Since that tragic day, the city of Fredericton has banded together to show their support in numerous ways for all the victims involved in that horrific morning. Some 31
