WELCOME
TO THE RISK
MANAGER
Hello and welcome to this edition of BMB’s The Risk Manager
Magazine. It’s hard to believe, but 2018 is almost half over as we go to
print with our summer edition, and the insurance industry continues
to encounter new challenges and emerging trends. A few noteworthy
topics of late include the increasing role of technology and data
analytics to evaluate and price risk; the different buying habits and
customer expectations by generation (e.g., millennials); the growing
threat of cyber/privacy-related risks to businesses and individuals;
and rising interest rates and catastrophe losses.
Despite the fact that estimated catastrophe losses from 2017 are
in the $100 billion range, surplus capital and an ongoing fight for
market share continue to keep overall market conditions soft in the
Property/Casualty arena. The exception is the auto policy market,
which is being driven by poor industry results and, to a lesser extent,
catastrophe-exposed property. At the end of the day, we expect rate
and price changes will vary based on class of business, historical loss
experience, and individual risk characteristics, but the bottom-line
cost will continue to be favorable to consumers for the balance of the
year.
Through this publication, we want to help keep our readers updated
on the latest market changes, trends, and products. By staying on
the forefront, we are able to shape change and drive the industry
to organize around the needs of our clients rather than reacting to
issues after they’ve already emerged. We hope you find the content
helpful and look forward to your continued feedback and support.
The articles in this edition include How to Survive an OSHA
Inspection, Workers’ Compensation in Texas, an update on the
Affordable Care Act, Contractors Pollution Liability, and some
considerations regarding Homeowners insurance.
