into major floods as thousands of gallons
of water can enter the home when it is
unoccupied. The leak is often discovered
a few days after it begins and turns into a
major loss to the family. Below are some
lost prevention measures you should
consider, especially for second homes:
•
Technology is now playing a role in
loss prevention. There are many leak
detection devices available on the
market today. These alert systems
immediately notify you when there
is a leak in the home. High-risk areas
such as hot water units, dishwashers,
and air conditioning units can all be
connected to alert systems to notify
you of leaks, even on your smartphone.
Most plumbing companies can install
these devices.
•
Enter into a service agreement with
your air-conditioning and plumbing
company to regularly schedule
maintenance checks on water devices.
• Especially on second homes, have
someone there, such as a caretaker, on
a daily basis when you are not. This is
especially true during the winter.
• Have an annual inspection with your
roofer, including an inspection of the
flashing.
• Maintain your gutters and clear debris
from them regularly to prevent water
from entering the home.
• Maintain the drains around your home
and have your landscapers clear any
debris from them.
A few proactive measures can have a major
impact in preventing water damage losses
and help you avoid time-consuming water
remediation services and repairs to your
home. +
