The Mariners Club Of

The Port Of New Orleans:

Connecting The Marine Industry In New Orleans

The Mariners Club of the Port of New Orleans( Mariners Club) was formed in 1979 as the result of a merger of two similar organizations of the time: the Gulf Steamship Claims Association( founded in 1948) and the Mariners Club of New Orleans( founded in 1960). A as nonprofit corporation, the Mariners Club provides a fraternal and educational network for marine insurance industry professionals. The membership comprises of professionals engaged in various aspects of the maritime industry of New Orleans and the Greater New Orleans area, such as insurance sales, brokerage, and underwriting; claims; surveying; risk management; and legal representation of vessel interests, employers, and marine insurers.

The Mariners Club holds six luncheons a year that primarily serve to inform our members. The luncheons feature an array of experienced and engaging speakers and showcase the leading professionals of the maritime industry.
The club endeavors to provide a platform for representatives from all facets of the maritime industry, from the Port of New Orleans, to the US Coast Guard, to publications tailored exclusively to the marine industry. Past industryrelated speakers include Gary LaGrange, president and chief executive officer of the Port of New Orleans; Chief Robert S. Hecker, police chief of the Harbor Police Department of New Orleans and twenty-eight-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department; Captain
Peter Gautier and Captain Philip Schifflin, former commanders of the US Coast Guard Sector New Orleans; and David Krapf, editor-in-chief of WorkBoat magazine, a print and online publication for commercial marine professionals.
In addition to featuring industryrelated presenters, the club also strives to connect its membership with leaders and innovators involved in various other

aspects of the Greater New Orleans area, including state and local government officials, judges and private business owners who contribute to the local economy. In recent years, the club’ s luncheons have featured Billy Nungesser, former president of the Plaquemines Parish Commission and current lieutenant governor of Louisiana; Judge Daniel E. Knowles, III, federal magistrate judge for the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana; Judge
Robin Pittman, Orleans Parish Criminal District Court; Patrick Mulhearn, executive director of Celtic Studios in Baton Rouge; and Tim Williamson, cofounder and chief executive officer of Idea Village, a nonprofit which helps foster the local entrepreneurial movement.
The current November luncheon, which takes place during the heart of football season, is a particular favorite of the club’ s membership. It will feature recurring speaker Jim Henderson, a prominent local sportscaster and the radio voice of the New Orleans Saints. Mr. Henderson will offer his expertise on the state of the football team as well as facilitate a short question-and-answer session.
The Mariners Club also conducts three social events annually: a crawfish boil in May; a golf tournament in October, held at the beautiful Audubon Golf Course; and a Christmas party in December, which is typically held on the Friday after the end of the annual International WorkBoat Show in downtown New Orleans.
