Taking all your possessions, not
being able to view your reflection in a mirror, taking even
your hairtie, wearing an identical
uniform to everyone you interact
with, having authority figures
in control wearing matching
uniforms and badges, isolating
inmates from general population on a “TB hold”...all these
things lend to institutionalizing
a person. It breaks you apart
from your identity and makes
you easier to control. Essentially,
this is the “breaking” of you.
Like housebreaking a dog, except
these are people.
Many will read this and think,
so what? These are criminals. I
don’t want them to have anything. Sadly, truth be told, the
vast majority of people I ran into
in jail have had life long drug
abuse problems. Those issues
aren’t being fixed in a standard
setting and the system is simply
completely broken. With most
jails becoming private money
making businesses worth billions of dollars, the conditions
and lack of justice will only
