BRITAIN COMPENSATES MAU MAU VETERANS
The British government has apologized and agreed to compensate to victims of the torture and brutality by the colonial government to thousands of Kenyans detained during the Mau Mau uprising 1952 – 1960. This is the first official acknowledgement by the British authorities of the brutal treatment including castration, rape and beatings by some of its forces during the struggle for independence in Kenya. The settlement follows test cases brought by three Kenyans in the London courts. The British government had earlier argued that too much time had elapsed for a fair trial but judges ruled it was wrong especially after the discovery of an archive of 8,000 documents from 37 former colonies.
