ABSTRACT
This is a report of an action research, which undertook the usage of portable devices in an
English class. As a result of preliminary observations, it was concluded that the group of 40
students, of various majors and ages, used a variety of devices in class, which constituted
distraction. Within their context and thanks to their economic status students are enticed to bring
cellphones, tablets, laptops and netbooks to class. A series of applications that fitted the
immediate concern were used to promote a more responsible usage of these devices in the
benefit of the ESL class. These applications included an LMS (Learning Management System)
that resembled a social network, a live interaction application and an online dictionary. As the
intervention proceeded, students became aware of and autonomous regarding the usage of the
platforms, networks and strategies implemented. It was found that without instruction, students
were able to productively use the tools provided; in addition, students expressed comfort and
interest in using such user-friendly tools. As a result of the intervention, it can be said that
students engaged properly to the classwork while using their portable devices. However, one of
the biggest limitations was the instability of wireless connections and Internet speed, which
triggered inconformity in the students.
