CONTRI BUTO R S :
What a start to 2016 it has been. The month
on January was filled with high’s and lows. The
biggest high without a doubt had to be the birth of
my gorgeous baby boy - Trey Knox Portman. The
little guy was born on Monday the 4th of January at
7.42am at the Linkwood Maternity ward in Linksfield.
He came out a healthy 3.6kg’s.
I have experienced many great things in my life
but nothing comes close to this. Trey is mine and
wife Amy’s first baby and we are loving every second
with him. I have become a pro and changing nappies
and recorded a best changing time of 46seconds
(waiting to see if Shez Morais and Brad Binder can
beat that?). So blessed and I thank my lucky stars
everyday for my beautiful wife and new baby boy.
Sure he will be running around the race track causing
mischief soon...
Another great thing to happen in January was
me getting to test ride the all-new Kawasaki ZX10R.
Throughout the month of January, Kawasaki dealers
across SA held launch evening where Kawasaki SA’s
only ZX10R in the country would be put on display for
customers and fans to gaze at.
Whilst at the Centurion Kawasaki launch, a Mr
Ahmed Khan was given the keys to his new ZX10R,
the first one to be delivered in SA, a month before
stock is due to arrive. Luckily we knew Ahmed so I
quickly got to asking him if he would let us test his
new bike? He gladly accepted and a few days later
drove out to Redstar Raceway to meet me and let
me ride the new litre bike from Kawasaki.
We bring you the full EXCLUSIVE SA Scoop test
in this issue. Big thanks to Ahmed for letting us test
his bike.

January meant back to the grind and I have to say
this deadline was very interesting indeed now that my
baby boy is around. Flat out work for 3 hours then
it’s up to get a bottle ready for a feed. Repeat this
every 3 hours. Thinking of changing the “EAT, SLEEP,
RIDEFAST, REPEAT” shirt design we have to “EAT,
NEVER SLEEP, CHANGE BOTTLE, CHANGE NAPPY,
REPEAT”, as it is more suited to my lifestyle now.
You will notice that there is not centrefold poster in
this issue, this is down to the fact that we simply have
to many cool stories and needed the space.
Now for the downside to the start of this year.
Unfortunately, Jannie Stander, a LEGEND in the
SA motorcycle industry, sadly passed away. This
news rocked the SA motorcycle industry as Jannie
was, and always will be, considered a LEGEND.
I remember Jannie as the “fastest man in the
world” when I was growing up and racing in the
Northern Region championship. He was that fast
rider that all us youngsters wanted to be like.
I was then fortunate enough to get to know Jannie
very well, seeing him at every race and prize giving
where most of the time he was sporting that famous
smile and even more famous pair of slops.
Jannie was always the funny, cheerful character at
the track and got even more so later on at the prize
giving after a drink or two. I will always remember him
as a funny, casual, well respected man who was a
real asset not only to SA motorcycling but also to life.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Jannie’s
family and friends. He will be sorely missed!
