MARSHALS
Safer Riding with Road Rangers
Here’s what a cyclist should expect from the Road Ranger Safety Initiative Marshals.
T
he most important thing to note is that our marshals
are there to keep you, the cyclist, safe. Therefore, it is
imperative that at every point you follow the instructions
set out by the marshals to ensure your safety on race day.
Bestmed Road Rangers will be providing official marshals on
race day, and it should be noted that these marshals spend
many hours training to become accredited and authorised to
perform these duties. On most Saturday mornings, you will find
these dedicated Road Ranger marshals and trainee marshals on
duty in races in and around the Gauteng area.
While most of our marshals are trained in basic First Aid, it is
not their first priority. The main concern will be general safety
of the riders, which incorporates the continued safe flow of
traffic, the safe progress for all competitors, and then finally

medical first aid if needed. We rely on medical support, where
necessary.
Your SAFETY is the primary concern for the Marshal:
• No marshal will ever intentionally do something to influence
a competitor, either favourably or negatively.
• No marshal may assist a competitor in any way, not even
with a puncture.
• Marshals will always operate within the boundaries of the
law and the rules of the road.
• Marshals have NO LEGAL authority to stop or control traffic,
therefore all traffic control is handled with utmost respect to
all road users.
Important to note: There is only one Road Rangers Marshal
Safety Initiative, which can be identified by their clothing.
