Grohar, MD, PhD ‘91 Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Division of Hematology/Oncology Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Nashville, TN How did Brother Rice prepare you for college and life? Brother Rice prepared me for college and life by providing me with the discipline to succeed. In high school, we were successful in the classroom and on the athletic field. I believe that this success stems from the academic excellence that is rooted in a tradition of discipline. I am a research scientist and a physician. Research is a unique blend of creativity and science. However, more importantly, the vast majority of concepts and ideas do not pan out. Therefore, to succeed, one must be totally disciplined and committed. This discipline translates into long hours and frustrating work, not much different than yet another sprint at the end of a 2 hour practice. Who was your favorite teacher? Brother Macintyre’s French class was one of the highlights of my experience. However, I would be remiss if I did not mention the late Sue Jones’ chemistry class. This class was difficult. However, it was one of the first classes where I connected the discipline of athletics to that of learning. I enjoyed that class, went on to become a PhD chemist but truly enjoyed the material. What did BR mean to you then and what does it mean now? I was very proud to go to Rice and am still proud to be part of the community. I enjoyed my experience. There was an intense school spirit that translated to success on and off the field. Because of this, many of my best friends from those days are still my best friends 20 years later. Today, Brother Rice is a part of who I am. The Warrior head is displayed prominently on my bulletin board in my office. It represents many of the things I try to achieve on a given day and it represents membership in a group of people with similar goals. I am proud to have attended this special school, and I am proud of all my classmates as well as those before and after me who have gone on to achieve great things. In what ways did the lessons you learned at Brother Rice translate into your success in the medical field? It has been instrumental in my decision to enter the medical field and succeed in research. The education at Rice is rooted in spiritually. It is education with a purpose to achieve the goal of helping others. I think this is why so many of my classmates and other Warriors in other years have gone on to careers in medicine. These are some of the best physicians in orthopedics, internal medicine, pediatrics etc. These physicians distinguish themselves by their performance in the medical field, but more importantly by their commitment to their patients. 28 pKevin Dzierzawski ‘09 signed with Queens of the South F.C. in Scotland after earning his degree and playing four years of soccer at Dartmouth University.
